Miami Dolphins Fan's Root For the New York Jets Crazy? Maybe, Maybe Not
Sun Life Stadium in beautiful Miami Florida will be the sight of Superbowl XLIV where the New Orleans Saints will take on the Indianapolis Colts for the right to hoist the Lombardi trophy. When the ball is kicked off on Sunday afternoon South Florida will have made about 155 million dollars off of everything leading up to the game. This is not a small amount of money andFloridians should be happy that the Superbowl is once again in their own backyard.
Although this may be true, it does not disguise that fact that the impact will not be as great as it was the last time the Superbowl was held in Miami in 2007 when the Indianapolis Colts were playing the Chicago Bears.
Now I know most of you are going to attribute this to the economy and how much the economic landscape has changed over the past few years. I agree with this view but pose a different reason why the impact isn't as great as it was in 2007. I believe that if the New York Jets would of made the Superbowl it would of been a greater impact to South Florida then the Indianapolis Colts.
I know what you are thinking Peyton Manning he is the biggest draw in the NFL, this is also true but Peyton and most logical fans know that the events leading up to the actual game are if not as important maybe more important than the game. Many Miami fans don't like New Yorkers and that's fair, we don't like Miami fans also. This is a fact, but we would of been in South FL for a week eating in your restaurants, shopping in your stores, going to your nightclubs and spending way more money than someone from the Midwest Such as Indianapolis, who is more inclined to just come for the game.
I also believe that there is no Underdog aspect to this Superbowl people love the story of the underdog. The New Orleans Saints are the feel good story of the year, after everything that happen with hurricane Katrina. The Jets would of been the underdog seeing as they needed everything to fall into place just to qualify for the playoffs. Then beat two division champions and had the Big Bad Colts on the ropes for the first half of the AFC title game.
The Jets would of been both the underdog and the villain, for trying to invade the Hated Dolphins home stadium and try to win their first Superbowl since the last time Joe Namath won after his famous guarantee. Ironically enough the Jets defeated the Colts in Miami FL to win their only Superbowl in franchise history. So as we sit down to watch the game with family and friends on Sunday remember that the Superbowl is important, but so is the week and events leading up to the actual game.
This year the Superbowl will hold significant amount of impact for Miami Dolphins fans, because according to the http://www.miamiherald.com/ the Dolphins are trying to get a proposal to use tax dollars to fund stadium improvements which could cost around $200 million dollars. Without these improvements it could be difficult to compete for future Super Bowls in Miami.
